Praktica MTL 5 35mm reflex film camera

History and Presentation of the Device:

The Praktica MTL 5 is one of the members of the range of rugged SLR cameras produced by the East German manufacturer Pentacon in the late sixties. This lineup included models such as the Praktica LLC, Super TL 3, MTL 3, MTL 5, and others. These cameras were designed to provide an affordable and durable option for amateur and professional photographers.

The MTL 3 and MTL 5 models were designed as evolutions of the original MTL 3, introduced five years earlier. The main exterior difference is the replacement of the chocolate bar coating with a smoother one. Although Praktica cameras from this era share aesthetic similarities, they offer essential features for film photography.

Technical characteristics:

  • Camera Type: Single-lens reflex (SLR).
  • Lens Mount: Compatibility with M42 mount lenses.
  • Shutter Speeds: The shutter operates from 1 second to 1/1000th of a second, with flash sync at 1/125th of a second. It also has a Bulb mode.
  • ASA sensitivity: Supports films from ISO 12 to 1600.
  • Power supply: One PX 625 battery (or replaceable by an alkaline PX 625A or an LR44 with adapter).
  • Focus: Manual with a stigmometer, microprisms, and a frosted circle to assist with focusing.
  • Cell: TTL cell (through the lens) powered by the battery. Light measurement is triggered by a lever above the trigger.
  • Viewfinder: The viewfinder is clear, with a needle oscillating between three marks to indicate exposure quality, based on camera settings and film sensitivity.

The Praktica MTL 5 represents a classic example of an SLR camera from the film era. It is robust, mechanical, and relatively easy to use. Its M42 mount offers a wide variety of compatible lenses, making it an attractive choice for photographers looking to explore different options. The simplicity of its controls makes it ideal for beginners while remaining versatile enough to satisfy more experienced photographers.

It is important to note that the real Praktica MTL 5 must have an engraving with its name on the top cover and a self-timer on the front. There are similar models, but make sure you own a genuine MTL 5.
