Minolta XG-1 35mm SLR film camera

History and Presentation of the Device:

The Minolta XG-1 is a 24x36 SLR, a piece of history in the world of film photography. It belongs to Minolta's XG series, a range launched in 1977, positioned between the high-end XD series and the mechanical SRT series. The XG series cameras use Minolta's MC/MD lens mount, providing compatibility with a variety of quality lenses.

Released in 1978, the XG-1 marked the beginning of the XG range. It is equipped with a focal plane shutter controlled by a centrally-dominated CdS cell. This electromechanical shutter achieves a shutter speed of up to 1/1000 of a second, with X-sync at 1/60th, providing excellent control over exposure.

One of the nice features of the XG-1 is the activation of the device via a crown located around the rewind crank. This crown not only allows you to turn the device on or off, but also to use the 10-second electronic self-timer or to check the battery status using an LED on the front.

In "on" mode, simply lightly touch the shutter button to activate the cell and measure the light, making it easier to prepare for shooting. A speed selection dial (from 1 second to 1/1000th of a second, including B exposure mode and Auto mode) is on the other side of the prism, with the shutter button in the center of the dial. By lifting the outer crown, you can select the ISO sensitivity of the film, ranging from ISO 25 to 1600.

The viewfinder is equipped with an indicator of the speed chosen by the automation, providing useful visual feedback for the photographer. In manual mode, the speed is not remembered, which may require greater attention.

Why do analog photography in 2024 ?

That's true... Why do you want to do film in 2024 in the digital age?

Film offers a unique and timeless aesthetic that digital cannot reproduce. The grains of the film, the colors and the contrasts create a depth and texture particular to film photos.

Film photography allows you to physically hold your photos and negatives, providing a more tactile and memorable experience. Each photo becomes a unique object that you can keep and cherish.

Shooting on film encourages you to think and plan each shot carefully. This develops your photography skills and teaches you to be more attentive to details.

Using a film camera connects you to a long tradition of photography. You're using technology that has captured historic moments and been practiced by generations of photographers before you.

With film, you focus on the present moment without being distracted by the screen and digital settings. This allows you to better appreciate and capture the essence of each moment.
