History and Presentation of the Nikon EM

The Nikon EM, a device with a captivating design, embodies a strategic turning point for Nikon. When it was released in 1979, it aimed to make Nikon quality more accessible while preserving the brand's manufacturing excellence.

Technical characteristics

  • Exceptional Design : Renowned for its exceptional design, the EM combines functionality and elegance. Its design was entrusted to a designer from Ferrari, which makes it a real aesthetic gem.

  • Economic Accessibility : To ensure financial accessibility, Nikon created a new range of lenses, the E lenses. Three E lenses were available at launch: a 50mm f/1.8, a 35mm f/2.5, and a 100mm f/2.8. These optics were mounted on a polycarbonate AI mount.

  • Reasonable Compromises : To maintain a competitive price, some features found on high-end models have been omitted. For example, there is no exposure lock or depth of field test.

  • Photographic Performance : Despite its more affordable positioning, the EM does not compromise on photographic performance. It offers automation with a prior choice of aperture, and the speeds chosen by the exposure meter are clearly displayed in the viewfinder.

  • Intuitive Use : The EM has a shutter with a range of 1/1000 to 1 second. The cell turns on by pressing the shutter button halfway, thus saving battery power.
